Sturgeon and Salmon in the Summer

This year’s keeper Sturgeon season in Astoria was one to remember! We had caught one fish on this particular day, and it was 49″ the perfect keeper. We tried five or so spots without much luck. I made a big move toward the end of the day, and luck would have it; it was the right move. We pulled in, and before all of our rods were in the water, we had a fish on. The action was non-stop until we had our six keepers for the day. All but one were between 49 and 50 inches. This trend tended to be consistent throughout the season. I believe I only had one fish all season under 46 inches. I’m not sure if that is just luck or what, but we have more fish over the slot limit than under what I saw this season. Although keeper season is over for the year, the best fishing is yet to come. July is an excellent month in Astoria, and I plan on being there almost every day. As the Sturgeon move into the Columbia River estuary, this truly becomes a world-class fishery. You can expect over 20 fish landed on any given day, and the average size being 4-6 feet. It is not uncommon to come across fish in the 8+ foot range. In water 15 feet or less, this is a fight you can only get in the lower Columbia River. With an excellent coho prediction, an Ocean Salmon and Sturgeon combo trip is one you won’t soon forget!
