Lewis River Salmon
With the limit already being pushed to 6 adults on the Lewis river, I am quite excited to see what the rest of the Fall has to offer. With the number of Cohos we are seeing in the Columbia River right now, I expect we are going to have a lot of fun in late October and November fishing for these. When fishing in the Lewis, I prefer to fish a lot of cured salmon eggs. There are several very effective ways to fish them; my favorite is a technique called hover fishing. I use bait of salmon eggs, a five-foot of leader with a single octopus style hook tied with an egg loop, and about a one-foot dropper down to my lead. I position the boat over the holes the salmon are staged in and deploy the setup to the bottom. Once I feel the led tap at the bottom of the river, I bring it up 2-5 turns on the reel depending on the depth and focus on the tip of the rod. The bite is often very subtle. When you see the soft tugs on the tip of the rod, time it for the next tug, and right when the tip of the rod starts to move again, that’s when you set the hook! There is no more fun way to target these fish! Each rain from now through November will bring fresh fish into the system.
Bonneville Pool Keeper Sturgeon
Although the season has not officially released yet, the keeper sturgeon season always opens January 1st and goes until our quota is met. Last year, the fishing was incredible and the season only lasted one week. Although the weather is exactly what you would expect in the middle of the winter in the Columbia River Gorge, layering up and bringing a double burner propane heater usually makes for an enjoyable day. Its never too early to book your trip for these prime dates.
