Columbia River Salmon and Buoy 10

Bouy 10

On the August 1st opener, the river fished exceptionally well for being early in the season. If that’s any indicator of how the rest of the season goes, we have a fantastic fall salmon run ahead of us. Since then, the tides have grown and slowed down fishing some but are starting to fall, and by the end of the week, I would imagine the fishing picks right back up! We will also keep wild Chinooks after August 10th, so bringing fish home will be much easier. With a two-fish limit this year and the season going through Labor Day, I expect to have some days where we tag the whole boat out. My Schedule for the Buoy 10 fishery is almost full, so don’t hesitate to book your trip.

Columbia River Fall Salmon

As the month progresses and the migrating salmon move further upriver, and closer to their spawning grounds, this is a great time to intercept them. I spend the month of September close to my hometown of Woodland, Washington catching these fish. The fish we catch here often have been out of the salt water for just a couple of days, which yields high-quality fish for the BBQ or Smoker. Not too many years ago, the most popular way to target these fish was to anchor up in “hog lines” and use large metal spoons called wobblers on the outgoing tide and wait for the fish to come to us. I have a lot of fond memories of this. There’s nothing better than being the hot boat in the line! Now the trolling has taken the fame and allows us to fish the outgoing tide and fish any tide. I also feel by trolling, we can search for schools of fish coming up the river rather than waiting for them to come to us. The most common setup is a Pro-Troll style flasher and spinner.
